If Nike and Off-White‘s Rubber Dunk looks familiar, it’s because it was first revealed back in February as part of a series of lifestyle sneakers celebrating the Tokyo Olympics. With the event still in question for 2021, Nike has begun to roll out silhouettes associated with the event.
According to Nike press, “[The Rubber Dunk] merges elements of the Nike Pegasus line with the Nike Dunk to honor Nike’s legacy in technical innovation and nod to skateboarding’s history of experimentation.”
On the inclusion of the air pocket, Off-White designer Virgil Abloh added, “It’s safe to say one of the greatest inventions in modern footwear is Nike’s approach to the idea of Air, and adding it as a cushioning element. Air is foundational to my understanding of what innovation can look like.”
In addition to hybrid elements, the shoe features Off-White’s signature motifs like Helvetica text placed inside quotes printed on the medial side of the shoe plus a zip-ties that’s looped through both labels. Meanwhile, the pre-school and toddler sizes swap out the zip tie with a non-plastic luggage tag.
